Kwame: Africa’s Answer To Reggae Music
By The Journalist SPECTRUM staff writer
To the many fans that have had the opportunity to witness Kwame and Wan Afrika perform, kudos to you. To the unfortunate few who have never had any encounter with the band, now is the time, especially with the release of their new CD - How Sweet It Is.
The band’s experience and inventiveness permeate the CD as they relentlessly on one track after another, prove to the reggae buff that there are still unvisited territories yet to be explored in the genre. The ubiquitous Kwame, aided by his rich baritone voice and impeccable vocal technique, takes command right at the outset and seldom gives the listener a breather.
Stressing the need for unity and togetherness, Kwame conveys his messages through hooks and phrases reminiscent of the late great icon Bob Marley whom Kwame names as one of his major influences. The band was recently nominated by the Chicago Music Awards as the most creative and culture-oriented band with just one year of exposure to the committee.
Based in Chicago via Ghana, Kwame’s popularity crystallized around the world when he opened for major reggae and African acts like Third World, Mutabaruka, Sonny Okusun, and Sunny Ade to name a few.
Deeply rooted in the Rastafarian faith, Kwame pens a chant dedicated to the movement at the beginning of each show. During this session he encourages the audience in a show of solidarity to become involved in spreading this gospel of unity.
A reggae performer since 1977, Kwame’s journey has taken him through Europe, the Caribbean, Canada and the US. A favorite at many campuses and festivals, he and the band split their time between touring nationally and remaining active on the busy Chicago reggae scene.
